THE NIGHTS WILL BE ALIGHT – WITH MORE THAN WHITE.

Standard

This year for the first time Kids With Cameras and their families will have the opportunity of exploring the Melbourne city in a far more safe and relaxed atmosphere. So to help you with your own camera challenge here are some hints from FOCUS FORCE to increase your chance of snapping some exciting SUPER SHOTs

As the sun sets tomorrow night and for the next 3 through until Sunday, the city will be aglow painted in the extreme with thousands of lights.. white and bright and every other you can imagine. For the first time the traditional WHITE NIGHT has moved from the Summer to Autumn. And another first will be the event spread over 3 nights to spread and lessen the crowds. That will be all the better for ease of getting around all the locations to being able to stop and take in the installations saving you from pushing and shoving crowds. It will add a new dimension to the whole of the event for families and others.                                  THAT WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR Kids With Cameras TO WORK AND SEEK THE BEST SCENES TO CAPTURE.

ALL across the city, along the banks of the Yarra and overflowing into the parks and gardens including Birramung Marr the magnificent creations will twinkle and glow throughout the night stirring and stimulating the imagination. If you are a Kids With Cameras the foto fun will be awesome and mind-blowing as you focus on it all. Three parks; Treasury, Carlton Gardens and Birrarung Marr will be transported into another realm for you to be mystified by. Oh, what a night it will be.

Birrarung Marr will transform into the Physical Realm where you will witness fantastic feats of grace and dexterity with works celebrating the art of performance. Engage your senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch in the Treasury Gardens’ Sensory Realm, and at Carlton Gardens, feed your soul and imagination with mysterious creatures and spiritual experiences as you immerse yourself into the Spiritual Realm.

BE DARING! BE DIFFERENT!

LOOK FOR THE UNUSUAL.

SUSPEND A MOMENT IN TIME WITH A STRIKING SILHOUETTE.

A silhouette is in fact like looking at a shadow. The light will have coming from directly in front of the camera and it’s eye so it is blinded. The subject will be just a black mass or outline in front of the light. Again, choose your backdrop carefully to create the right effect. That’s the clue!

Kid’s  With Cameras WORKING IN THE DARK.

Cameras were not made for a world of darkness. That’s because, they like us, need light to see. But, during WHITE NIGHT there is a tremendous amount of light to work with. Still one tried and true camera clue is pointless. That being the light should come from behind or the side. Not into the eye of camera. However, on this occasion the light has to come from the front as that’s where it’s source is. So, there are a few things to be aware of to catch the most stunning SUPER SHOTS.

A DASH OF BLACK WILL MAKE THE COLOUR STANDOUT.

The black sky of night will provide a great backdrop to the many hundreds of foto ops that you will find in the streets and parks of the city. Stand back and study each one separately. Look at them from all angles. Decide which is the best. That’s how to find a SUPER SHOT. If doesn’t work the first time; try again. You have nothing to lose. And remember to avoid things that distract from your subject.

BREAK THE RULE – MOVE THE CAMERA IN MANY WAYS.

Sometimes, rules are made to be broken. And WHITE NIGHT is certainly one of the exceptions. Be very selective in your choice of subject as sometimes the subject will do the moving for you. Examples of this are people walking and running. On the other hand, you may choose to move the camera; wiping the camera across the subject like a paint brush making a stroke on canvas. The effect can be a million different looks. Take a stationary subject being a coloured light or lights and then move the camera in a line – up and down – sideways – in a square or in circles. You will be amazed and what you can create and capture when you move. Spin, twist move the camera in fascinating patterns above your head.

PUFF.. AND IN A FLASH THE MOMENT IS LOST.

Simply because the cameras flash doesn’t know it’s place. For the camera when it’s dark it’s only natural to want to light up the subject. That’s what it does. But on a time like this lighting the subject is simply adding more light to an already light subject. So, take steps to try and eliminate the problem. Most cameras are automatic. But, try this trick by putting a piece of black cardboard over the flash to blind it. Or, perhaps a piece of tissue to soften the amount of light.

INGRID DISCOVERS GEMS THAT SPARKLE IN THE OUTBACKS RUGGED TERRAIN.

Ingrid Tipton’s searching eye roamed across the stark ground of Hyden’s dry landscape lo0king for images that reflected the environment today. How the country must have altered since the arrival of the early settlers who saw its potential for wheat growing. The wildflowers would have been part of that view during the Spring changing the plains appearance as the new season blooms began to come to life. She made the wildflowers of the west stand out where they sprouted, adding a new, but annual contrast to where she lives. See which one you think deserves a POST Of PRAISE.

WOWH14-IT8. One in bloom, and a bud waiting to make it’s presence felt. In a premature Spring burst of wildflowers, these have all that it needs to attract a POST Of PRAISE. Will these go onto higher recognition at in the 2015 ROCKLEY AWARDS?

wowh14it-7WOWH14-IT1 It’s a case of adapt or die for the wildflowers of the west. The foreground of this image gives the viewer an idea of what a struggle it must be for them to survive in the unrelenting heat and waterless environment. Give it a consideration for a POST Of PRAISE.wowh14it-5WOWH14-IT2. Is it a Boronia bush, certainly looks like one. But, then maybe not. The red of the bush is a striking contrast to the blurred background.

SEPTEMBER JUNIOR OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHERS WORKED HARD TO COME UP WITH MORE SUPER SHOTS THROUGHOUT THE MONTH.

It was a busy time for the Kids With Cameras who wore the official badge to Tesselaar’s Tulip Festival and the Royal Melbourne Show during the school holidays. And the best news is that they came up with the goods providing more potential SUPER SHOTS. The best of these will go on show here on focusfor during November. We thank both organizations for offering the FREE PASSES to the events and giving the KWC the chance to add them to their camera challenge.

FOCUS FORCE Kids With Cameras TAKE ON THE TASK OF LOOKING FOR SUPER SHOTS ON  INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS.

Many of you who have been following and making POSTS Of PRAISE for Madeleine Puli know what these Kids With Cameras can achieve. In November, you will see the works of Matthew Bory featured throughout the month while on a school trip to Cambodia. He travelled there with classmates from Mentone Grammar School and returned with some images as mementos of his time away.

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR JUNIOR OFFICIAL PHOTOGARPHERS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR.

As the months and days count down, not only a busy school time lies ahead but also for opportunities for the Kids With Cameras. This includes the Melbourne Cup Carnival with the chance to wear a JOP on Kids Day on the final Saturday. There will be lots to cover with the camera. On November 11, we stop for a minute of silence on Remembrance day. This year is especially significant as we lead up to the centenary of the landing of Gallipoli. In Melbourne, the Myer Christmas window light up and KWC can have the fun of wearing the badge there. And this will see the launch of the FIND FESTIVITY IMAGES for the Christmas season. First time last year we hope to have a large and statewide collection this year.

MADELEINE RETURNS FROM NY TO BEING A “WORKING CLASS GIRL” AGAIN.

Standard

Just like Cinderella losing her celebrity status, Madeliene is back in school ,and improving after a frantic time in the United States and NEW YORK. Unperturbed by a stint in hospital, she was bursting at the reins wanting to get on with her trip, and all the things the family had planned to do. Nothing was going to stop her, and this part of her journey.

To deliver the FOCUS FORCE FRIENDSHIP BOOK” Melbourne City Of Contrasts”,she had two destinations. The first being the Australian Consulate where she was met by the Deputy Consul General Natalie Roche. She offered the book as a gift of friendship and goodwill and then asked the Deputy Consul General of doing the FOCUS FORCE Kids With Cameras of Hyden School in West Australia the honor of making her CHOICE from the 3 images of WAVE ROCK she also had with her . You can see the CHOICE below, and what impressed the DCG. The next stop was  the School Of The Blessed Sacrament in New York city, not far from Broadway and Central Park. Here the procedure was the same with Madeleine offering the book to the Assistant Principal, the school and the students.

COCNY PIC2 MAD & DP.TWO WEEKS ago today, Friday Sept.  FOCUS FORCE FRIENDSHIP AMBASSADOR Madeleine Puli fulfilled her obligation to deliver the FFKWC FRIENDSHIP BOOK –

I found it very interesting to see the School of the Blessed Sacrament and how it looked on the inside because when I was walking down the street towards it I had no idea it was a school. It blended in with all the other buildings around it. We met the Assistant Principal Caroline Sliney and I was able to take her through the photo book to explain what things were and how they compared with similar places in New York. I told her that my primary school was quite different from hers as we have lots of wide open space and big offices and classrooms. It was amazing to see a school on the other side of the world.

Wave Rock with the Moon       The image taken by Amberleigh Hendry of Hyden in Western Australia was the CHOICE of Deputy Consul General Natalie Roche at the Australian Consulate in New York. It, along with the other 3 selections will be displayed in the foyer of the consulate for a period of time. Just like an image of the Rock taken in 1964, and took out the grand award at the New York Photographic Fair.

Amberleigh is a year 7 student at the school and took part in the FOCUS FORCE Kids With Cameras foto workshop program only 4 weeks prior to the presenetation.

Australian Deputy Consular General Natalie Roche was impressed by the photographs of Wave Rock and the efforts of the WA Focus Force Kids with Cameras.

She particularly noticed the lighting captured in the photographs and said they would be placed on display in the foyer of the Australian Consular General’s Office in New York along with the City of Contrasts album by the Melbourne Focus Force photographers.

The photos of Wave Rock were also presented to Assistant Principal Caroline Silmey at the School of the Blessed Sacrament in New York City.  We told Caroline a little bit about Wave Rock, where it was in Australia and gave her an idea of it’s size. She too commented on the quality of the photographs and we suggested it was another great reason for her to visit Australia one day! She said she would show the images and those in the City of Contrasts album to the staff and students of the school and encourage any budding photographers to submit photos of their iconic city to Focus Force.  Report by Cheryl Kohek (Mother of Madeliene)

COC NY PIC Mad consul sign

FOCUS FORCE KWC FRIENDSHIP AMBASSADOR takes time out to pose for a cheesy grin photo in the entrance to the Australian Consulate in New York. This is sure to a cherished reminder along with others taken with the Deputy Consul General on this auspicious visit for the young girl.

Visiting the Australian Consular General in New York to present the Focus Force Melbourne City of Contrasts photo book was an honour. The Deputy Consular General Natalie Roche and her assistant Kathryn made us feel very much at home with their Aussie accents and Tim Tams! And they thought the book was great too!
