During the 5 days of the 2016 ROCKLEY FLOWER FOTO EXHIBITION at this year’s MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW, there were many visitors to the exhibition. Like every previous show they came from everywhere from the breadth and width of the Australian continent. Then like always, there was a smattering of internationals with a fair representation of Kiwis as usual.

FLOWER FOTO SUBMISSIONS FOR ’17 ROCKLEY FLOWER FOTO EXHIBITION DUE ON APRIL 2OTH. GET SORTING.

If you were one of the Kids With Cameras who registered at the FOCUS FORCE KWC ROCKLEY EXHIBITION to enter images for the ’17 collection; now’s the time to do it! FF is planning a massive event for next year, with lots of excellent images, and loads of activities for Kids With Cameras. We’re looking to seeing your flower fotos as part of it. Theres going to be a major incentive to be part of it.

Many people passed by taking the time to wander through the FOCUS FORCE ROCKLEY FLOWER FOTO GARDEN as it now called. A large number of them took the time to spare more than they would have imagined to make their CHOICES in the annual POP PIKz POLL. It is always fascinating to watch the concentration of the decision makers going through the process, comparing notes, and entering their choices. It is fair to say that all of a sudden they have an understanding what the official CHOICE MAKERS are confronted with each year.

DSCN1187[1]

One of the most exciting aspects of the exhibition is the ongoing search for new aspiring young photographers. This year has the potential for being a great and rewarding year with not only eager Kids With Cameras but also supportive parents, an all important part of the package. Without them, the KWC have an uphill battle. FOCUS FORCE is exhilarated by the possibilities for 2017. It has the promise of being a great year with works not only fro  Victoria, but also the west, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania, Queensland, and even the likelihood of Canada. This would make it being the third that the collection has truly been an international collection.

Over the coming days, and weeks contact will be made with all the Kids With Cameras who not only registered to submit flower fotos for the 2017 ROCKLEY FLOWER FOTO EXHIBITION but also showed expressions of interest to become involved in the wider program. It is these KWC that make the program so much more rewarding, and not only a photo learning experience; but also a life experience. FOCUS FORCE is all about FOTO FUN for Kids With Cameras.

The CUNARD Queen Victoria dropped anchor off the shore of Kangaroo Island at Penneshaw just 3 weeks ago. From the time the majestic liner arrived until the final FLASH Of FRIENDSHIP when she departed, the local KWC worked in small groups, and individually to capture their images of the maiden visit, and a moment in history.

To all of those, I wish to say a hearty thank you for your superb effort. Some having to battle with the schools athletics schedule, while others walked the beach and the town on a very warm day to hopefully capture their potential SUPER SHOTS. Those images. thanks to Art teacher Miss Durgs have been delivered to FOCUS FORCE for the next part of the process to select the finalists, which will in turn be sent to the Choice-makers. They will have a difficult, and ardous task to complete the final selections.

From the early morning work of the reception students who showed excitement and determination to find their images. Extremely young Kids With Cameras forgot the thrill of a beach party to gety on with the job. No one complained, no one missed the point of being there, it is a morning that FOCUS FORCE will remember with fondness.

Later in the morning saw the 5 FOCUS FORCE FRIENDSHIP AMBASSADORS down by the Welcome to Kangaroo Island sign which stood for the backdrop to the official photographs with the Master, Captain Stephen Philpott and his crew. They all revelled in the time spent together, enjoying the event, and handling their job responsibly and “professionally”. I’m sure that the Captain and assembled crew and dignitaries will recall the time, and the preparation for the evenings FLASH Of FRIENDSHIP. The Ambassadors did FOCUS FORCE and their school proud.

After Lunch another group headed out, this time on foot they first walked into town down to the dock, through the car park and through the park overlooking the back passage, and eventually returning to school laden with their photo booty. The group including 3/4’s were ambitious in their searches and eager to experiment the new ideas and concepts being explained to them by FOCUS FORCE.

Three- four students scramble for positions looking for frames amongst the branches with the Queen Victoria inside them.

Late in the afternoon saw the first two senior students return from the school sports day. They had competed, and travelled for several hours from early morning. And now here they were back and into the closing hours of the project, rady and willing to capture their ideas on camera. Sisters Genevieve and Charlotte with Mum wre in the park, and spent time learning and studying different locations that might possibly help them achieve their goal, but just as importantly learning something more about taking more interesting about taking photos. FOCUS FORCE is sure they did!

DSCN1126[1]

They were also joined by Abi, and took up their positions aiming to impress viewers and the Choice-makers. FOCUS FORCE is sure they will in the coming weeks.

Then there were the other Kids With Cameras like Mimi who returned from the sports day only to second her mum for the role of driver as she chauffeured her committed daughter from location to location to find views of the luxurious  sea lady QUEEN VICTORIA against backdrops and foreground images of Kangaroo Island.

The last hurrah as this FOCUS FORCE Kids With Camera lines up the QUEEN VICTORIA in her viewfinder for the farewell FLASH Of FRIENDSHIP.

A NOTE OF GRATITUDE TO THE FOCUS FORCE Kids With Cameras FROM PROJECT COORDINATOR PHILLIP WILLIAMS.

A project of the magnitude of the FLASH Of FRIENDSHIP To The QUEEN VICTORIA demands a high degree of planning and organization. Weeks of work go into preparing for the success of the project. But, it’s ultimate success lies in the hands of the Kids With Cameras and their enthusiasm to make it work. It is my pleasure to say that the efforts of the Penneshaw students of Kangaroo Island Community campus have risen to the task,     displayed a high level of determination in making it work. That is to their credit, their school, teachers. In a number of cases – parents can stand tall in supporting their Kids With Cameras in their help in having them achieve their goals. Without mentioning their names; they know who they are, as do a number of students who gained praise for their efforts along the way. It goes without saying that Head Teacher Leanne Woods together with her staff are owed a special mention of gratitude for accepting, and taking part in the project. That special thanks also goes to the schools art teacher Desiree Jurgs for the outstanding effort she has put into the project. My thanks and gratitude to each and everyone of you.

Throughout the show days the KIDzPIKz ROCKLEY greeting cards have been popular as in previous years with a steady stream of sales each day. The packs selling for 4 for $5, and 8 for 10 have helped the program for another year. With not every one being sold making the purchaser aware of the program and it’s objectives, but also those who receive them from the sender with their special messages. Thank you to all those that have bought them.

Day three is about to dawn with the cooler weather and rain as promised. That won’t dampen the spirit of garden show-goers that’s to be sure. However, inside the Exhibition Buildings the outside will be of no concern with so  much to see. And, a whole day to go for the skies to clear in time for the Twilight session tonight.DSCN1170[1]

For overall I would have to go with MP2 nothing about it that I don’t like, wish I had taken it.

THE HERITAGE CHOICE

Misha Ravipati

Chosen by Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show Director Greg Hooton

RCKsub16-MRH

I like this photo as there appears to have been a flash of inspiration in the whole scene. The focus flower is powerful and colourful. Its positioning in the composition shows great judgement as, while central,  it is a curving image with the addition of the leaf on the left to balance the position of the petals left and right. The bright green foreground with odd red flowers, separates nicely rom the duller mid ground which repeats the green and red. The Exhibition buildings on the left are the feature setting and home  for the Rockley Award, which has run for ? years now and they are balanced by the green tree on the right. In fact the somewhat fuzzy foliage of the tree in front of the buildings adds considerably to the overall balance of the composition.

HE OITHONIA CHOICE

Misha Ravipati

Chosen by world acclaimed professional photographer and wildlife artist Dr. Pete Marshall

RCKsub16-MROIT

” Roses Roses Roses ” – “picking the focal focus point as the darkish red/pink rose, surrounded by a halo of paler out of focus flower heads creates a good balance and composition. The lighter pinkish tinge on the edges of the petals lifts the ‘hero’ flower forward and away from the others too, setting it apart from the background of massed flowers. Good overall composition”.

THE REKASU CHOICE           Madeleine Puli                                                                                            Chosen by Melbourne International Flower & Garden show Event Manager Kathleen Rushford.

rck16 sub. MP1

The flower is perfectly centered so I can see time & care has been taken there to achieve that. The colour of the flower is so vivid & they have carefully chosen a beautiful subject matter with no marks or imperfections. I also love how the background is one colour & faded so that the foreground really pops out at you.

The NiCe CHOICE

Madeleine Puli
Chosen by graphic artist Nikki Cuffe

rck16 sub. MP5

A beautiful and popular flower set against a muted background to bring strength to the subject.
