14 years ago the world awoke on Sept 11 to the news that the US was under attack, and that thousands of people had died in the airliner attacks on New York’s TWIN TOWERS. It was also a significant mileste in the arrangements for the FOCUS FRIENDSHIP EXHIBITION to Portugal. The Farewell Exhibition was about to open in Warrnambool, and the group of Friendship Ambassadors comprising Hayley Flook from the Merrivale PS, Rhianna O’Keefe from StJosephs, and Bruno Santos to make the final announcement for details of their trip to Portugal. The arrangements were in place and a special dinner with guests including the Portuguese Honary Consul to Australia; the Honorable Dr. Carlos De Lemos and his wife in attendance.
The impact of all the world actions of those days changed all that, and the plans were thwarted and all plans to travel cancelled. It was a disappointment, but understandable under the circumstances.
After due consideration FOCUS FORCE made the decision for the FRIENDSHIP EXHIBITION to continue its journey was made, and contact was made with the schools that the group had planned to visit with the help of the Portugese consulate in Melbourne.
The SUPER SHOTS included in the presenatation were selected from a group of students from most Warrnambool Primary schools and commenced with the students participating in FOCUS FORCE workshops. The project focused on and was part of the 2001 PORTUGUESE FESTIVAL and took place over the festival weekend and included the unveiling of two statues of the historic explorers overlooking Lady Bay and the Bass Straits from Warrnambools Cannon Hill. Images of the local area including the Port Campbell area and Loch Ard gorge plus a trip to the fabled grave yard and shifting sands of the Mahogany ship site.
The collection arrived in Lisbon and delivered to the Australian Embassy in December 2001. Late in the month it was handed over to the school in Sintra before returning to the embassy and care of the ambassador, Dr.Janet Gardiner. In the beginning of the next year, 2002 it went to Faro and Lagos in the south. It eventually finished its official travels to schools that we are aware of being shown at a school in Fatima. Bruno, actually later visited the school with his Portuguese born mother .
The image above is one of the selected SUPER SHOTS from the Portugal students included in the 2001 FOCUS FORCE FRIENDSHIP EXHIBITION.
During its time in Portugal it also had the honour of being exhibited in the embassy, and in Lagos; in the city library. Information later received proved it to be highly regarded and enjoyed, an achievement that all involved should be justifiably proud of.
It was a proud result for the FOCUS FORCE Kids With Cameras and marked one of the greatest results of a FRIENDSHIP EXHIBITON.
This also was added to by the fact that the Sintra school sent a reciprocal collection to Australia which was officially exhibited at the East Warrnambool PS. It then became part of the FOCUS FORCE FRIENDSHIP EXHIBITION which was later to developed to New York.
In 2014, FOCUS FORCE FRIENDSHIP AMBASSADOR Madeleine Puli delivered the book “A CITY OF CONTRASTS” to the The School Of The Blessed Sacrament and the Australian Consulate in New York; the first overseas gift since the last to that city. Here she is shown showing the book to a National Geographical photographer.

TRAVELLIN JUDGES – VISITING THE US.
FOCUS FORCE KWC judges who did the honours for this years ROCKLEY FLOWER FOTO AWARDS have spread their wings to the US on different missions. LEANNE COLE left on last Wednesday heading on a journey that will take her to states from the west to the east of the continent. While there, she will not only being camera ready, but also making contact with many likeminded enthusiasts to expand her address book and also to widen her own knowledge. She is dedicated to the task of helping and encourage others with their photographic skills. An enthusiastic blogger, a recently launching her own on-line magazine for women photographers. We hope that it is an exciting and rewarding trip.
Next week on the 8th another of our judges and long time supporter of the Kids With Camera, DR. PETE MARSHALL boards a flight to the states to take part in another milestone in her creative life. Pete will be in the country for a number of weeks to share in the accolades for having her wildlife art being included in the Birds in Art, for the sixth time. Travelling all over the country also, she will take in several of the places where the exhibition will be on show, and also sharing the time in photo shoots and catching up with others in the photo and art world. Image above shows “Freckled Duck Patterns”; this years accepted painting. By the way it was selected from hundreds from around the world. That’s a feather in the cap.
HERE’S A THOUGHT. Imagine the inspiration these two photographers give the Kids With Cameras, and FOCUS FORCE wonders how many of today’s youngsters may have similar paths in life to travel.
