In another of this weeks series telling us about the CHOICE MAKERS decision and why the particular image caught the eye, we bring you this one by Jessica Gottwaltz. The Mayor Cr. John Northcott was extremely impressed by the image and adds his words to the collection. It helps us to understand why and how the choices were made, and wonder do you agree?

Councilor Northcott was duly impressed by all the submissions presented for the category; “SHIP-CITY SCAPE”. But, the image submitted by Jessica to him, most caught the essence of the city and the ship.  To back up his opinion he wrote;

The category theme was PORTLAND & ASPECTS. I was looking for the ship with identifiable landmarks. How did you see it fitting that?This image captured the entire cruise ship as well as the impressive Portland Marina, all from the view of the town centre.  It shows the proximity of the Portland Foreshore and ocean edge to the business hub of Portland.  Finally, it includes the Port of Portland, which is  a major employer in our Shire and a very significant and iconic feature of Portland.

 What impressed you about the image? It shows many different aspects of Portland – from the Marina, to the Foreshore to the Port of Portland – and takes it all in from the town centre.  It captures both the beauty and business side of the town.  We live in a beautiful part of the country, and we like to be able to show that off, but we must not forget our commercial successes and the bread and butter of what keeps our region thriving.  I congratulate the photographer on capturing the large number of ships in the Marina, showing how busy our harbour can be.  The size of these ships in the foreground also indicates the impressive size of the cruise ship.  Finally, the angle that this photo is taken from and use of line markings on the road shows an impressive depth to the image.

Any general comments you might like to make. It’s fantastic to see that the photographer managed to find sunshine on what had started as a very gloomy day.

About focusfor

The FOCUS FORCE photographic workshop program for Kids With Cameras is based in Melbourne, Australia. The projects have gone beyond the Victorian borders, into New South Wales, and Tasmania.Through others including a backpacker it has been provided to children in Thailand, and a teacher in Portugal has inspired children there as well. Apart, from the fun of learning about the camera and developing the skill of taking better photos; the best of which are raised to the status of SUPER SHOTS,the works have been mounted as collections under the banner of the FOCUS FORCE FRIENDSHIP EXHIBITIONS, and sent as gifts of friendship and goodwill to the United States, Italy, Japan, China - others are still being worked on. The program enrciches the children's knowledge, and as a side benefit makes them more aware of their own surroundings,and all that is to value where they live. Then comes the delight of being achievers, and having their self esteem boosted by their successes.The term "kids with cameras" was first used by the program's forerunner; CLICKER - the "club for kids with cameras", and dates back to the mid 1980's. The name change came about as wanting to be more appropriate to the older student group that the program now works with.
